conserved for missionary purposes. Since it was not possible to determine at the time how this ebject could best be attained, the property was placed in the hands of Trustees who would determine how this purpose could best be carried out. The question whether German missionaries are to be allowed to resume work is a question for the Goverment and is quite distinct from the question of the disposal of the property by the Trustees. In the event, however, of permission being granted to the German missions to resume work in their former fields, their claim to the use of their former property is one which, for obvious reasons, it would be difficult to set aside.

In regard to certain majer matters it will not be possible for the Trustees to act until the Government has given its decision. As soon as this is given, however, it is desirable that the claims put forward by the GermaN missions should be dealt with an expeditiously as possible.

The fellowing, as we understand, are the wishes of the different German societies:-

(1) The Berlin Society does not desire to resume work in Hongkong and would like to have its property sold and the proceeds handed over to it for the work in the Kwangtung Province. It would no doubt be necessary that an arrangement should be come to between the Church Missionary Society and the Berlin Society regarding the care of any orphans for whom the former society may at present be responsible:

(2) The Hildesheim Hission are seeking permission to resume work in Hongkong and, if this is granted, will make applicat- ien to the Trustees for the use of their property.

(5) The Phenish Society wish to retain Kos:12 and 14 St. Stephen's Lane and to dispose of the large house in Bonham Read, using the proceeds derived from its sale for the support of their work in the mainland.
